*There are rare cases where a person with brain death will remain on life support machines (usually because a loved one with medical decision-making authority chooses to keep the affected person on life support). Brain death means your entire brain - including the brain stem, which controls your heartbeat and breathing - stops working permanently.* After that five-minute window, your brain cells will die. Once your heart stops and clinical death begins, there’s a short window where your brain cells can survive without a supply of blood and oxygen. This lasts about five minutes on average. This means you aren’t breathing, your heart isn’t pumping and blood isn’t circulating. The difference between those stages is whether or not it’s possible to revive someone. When you go into cardiac arrest, this is a state known as “clinical death.” Different stages of deathįrom a medical standpoint, death happens in stages. Without electrical current, your heart stops pumping entirely, and you go into cardiac arrest. When asystole happens, your heart’s electrical system has no detectable activity at all. The relaxed muscle lets your heart’s chambers expand and fill up with blood, and your heart will pump out that blood during the next heartbeat.
